Review- Ballad of Kaziranga by Dileep Chandan

Ballad of Kaziranga

As the name suggests, Ballad of Kaziranga is a story of three people and their shared love for Kaziranga. Author has unfolded the majestic tale of this national park through the lives of these three men and their dreams, aspirations and sometimes even their frustration. Written originally in Assamese by Dileep Chandan, the book is translated into English by Parbina Rashid.

All we know about Kaziranga National Park is that it’s a world heritage site spread across the floodplains of Brahmaputra river and it is home of endangered one-horned rhinos. But in his story Dileep Chandan has thrown light on the current state of affairs in the forest and the problems plaguing the region including poaching and deforestation.

One can clearly observe that the book has been written by a veteran reporter as the narrative is full of background information on Kaziranga. The characters needlessly spew information about the forest which hinders the flow of story. After a certain point it feels as if it’s a nonfiction book which is a great disappointment for a fiction lover like me.
