Review

This is the first self help book I read in 2018. There are seven sections in this book which talk about discovering your true self, your relationship with yourself, relationship with your circumstances, relationship with your partner, relationship with family, friends and society, relationship with your work & career and the essence of a liberating journey. Each section begins with beautiful quotes pertaining to the subject matter.

First of all I must acknowledge that author has taken great care to stick to uncomplicated language and simple understandable facts. He has refrained from using rigid scientific words which makes it easy to understand the core concepts.

The subtitle of the book is very catchy- Break Free from the Shackles of a Programmed Life. It goes without saying that I had high hopes for this book. I wanted to understand how we can leave behind our stereotypical conditioned lifestyle and embrace a healthy way of life. I respect that some people got a lot out of it but personally I didn’t enjoy this book very much. It actually paraphrases classic statements of popular psychology revolving around confidence, cooperation, self-dependence, positivism and mental conditioning.

I agree that it presents the basic idea of positive life in a structured way. Author has raised several important questions for readers so that they can understand the concept ‘programmed life’. But he doesn’t really offer any specific solution. That being said, the book is not completely devoid of solutions. But most of them approach the problem in a generalized way.

I think the main problem with this book is that it tries to win your trust through persuasion. But once its effect wears off, you realize that it is easier said than done. At the end, I would like to add that the book has not affected me in a profound way that would compel me to change. So even after finishing the book, question remaines the same- HOW TO break free from the shackles of a programmed life.

Rating- 2.5/5
